How to Play Razz Poker Razz is the polar opposite of 7 card stud, so if you’re familiar with that game razz will be easy to pick up. However, if you’re only familiar with holdem or omaha, or you’ve never played poker at all, razz might be confusing for the first couple of hands. RAZZ is about making the worse possible poker hand you can with a combination of five cards out of seven available cards (Cards are dealt 2 down, 4 up, 1 down). As in all low hand games, pairs count against the player. That is, any hand with no pair defeats any hand with a pair; one pair hands defeat two pair or three of a kind, etc. No-pair hands are compared starting with the highest ranking card, just as in high poker, except that the high hand loses. In ace-to-five low, straights and flushes are ignored, and aces play as the lowest card. Under these rules, the best RAZZ hand is A-2-3-4-5.

Betting in RAZZ

Next each player still in the hand is dealt another card face up, followed by another betting round that begins with the player whose up cards make the best hand.

Next a third is dealt face up followed by another betting round, then a fourth up card is dealt again followed by a betting round.

Finally a card is dealt face down followed by the final betting round and then a showdown.

At the showdown players must make the worse 5-card poker hand out of the seven cards they were dealt. So 5-6-9-K-J beats A-2-3-3-5 and 6-3-7-8-2 beats 5-8-9-4-A.

Razz is a simple game and the objective is to make the best possible low hand. The format of this game is the same as seven-card stud high but in razz only the lowest hand wins. If you’re familiar with seven card stud, just know that razz is essentially seven card stud, but upside down.

Here’s a brief overview of the rules of razz:

• Players use their five lowest cards to make a hand
• There is no high-hand, as low hands win in Razz
• There is no qualifier for making a low hand
• Flushes and straights have no value
• Aces count as a low card

Under these rules the best hand in razz is ace, deuce, three, four and five – this is known as a ‘wheel’. Yes it’s a straight, but remember that straights and flushes don’t count in razz – it’s only the rank of cards that matters.

The Betting Structure of Razz

Razz is normally played eight handed and since it’s a stud game it’s played with a fixed-limit betting structure. The betting is almost identical to seven-card stud, a game we assume you’re familiar. Therefore in this next section we’ll only be highlighting the differences between the two games.

There are two differences to seven card stud. In stud high, the lowest exposed card must “bring it in” to stimulate the action, but in Razz it’s the highest card that’s obligated to make the initial bet. Secondly, the player with the lowest exposed hand goes first on all subsequent betting rounds. Razz is truly seven card stud upside down.

Hand A can make an “8 low” with . Hand B can make a “7 low” with . This makes a straight, but remember that straights and flushes don’t count for anything in razz. In this example hand B is our winner.

Razz Strategies

Similar to its high hand cousin, razz prizes live cards so the value of your hand rises or falls based upon what exposed cards you see around the table. Obviously, you want to start with three low cards and not see any of your outs exposed in an opponent’s hand. It also helps for small ranks that you already hold to be out as it minimizes you pairing that card. The minimum starting hand you should play against a strong group of starting players is three cards no higher than a seven.

Razz is a game of boards and it’s fairly easy to determine if you’re ahead in a hand or behind, which means that chasing low cards can be expensive. Likewise, if you have a bunch of babies on board, it’s tough for someone to call you who is showing a worse hand than yours.

How To Play Razzle

As in all forms of poker, observe the tendencies of your opponents and adjust your play accordingly. Many players avoid this variation of poker as they find it very stressful to be dealt starting hands that would be excellent for high only. As they go on a run of pocket Kings, rolled up Queens and other starting hands which would be powerhouses in regular seven card stud, they tend to begin to tilt in razz. Be sure to keep your emotions in check when playing this game.

Razz has been around for a long time, but has seen a resurgence of interest since mixed games such as HORSE have become popular in recent times. There is no substitute for playing experience so the best way to learn how to play razz is to play it. Hopefully this lesson has given you a taste for the game.
